Google Analytics
Description
Google Analytics (GA) is a free marketing tool provided by Google. It is a very useful tool to use to get some intelligent feedback on how many users visit your site, how long they stay on your site and how they got there.
How to get going with Google Analytics
We install Google Analytics on all our Website's. All you need to do is register with Google and then copy the registration number into a configuration screen on the CMS's Administration pages.
Here is a link to the page you need to sign up for Google Analytics
If you don't use a CMS, it is still very easy to use as long as you are comfortable copying simple code into your sites HTML. Google explains all you need to know on their site. However, the advantages of using a CMS to install GA is that you can easily control which pages of your site it tracks, stop it tracking some users. i.e. yourself and maybe your Website Designer.
Configuring Google Analytics to run with a Drupal CMS Website
You need sign in as an administrator and go to Administer -> Site Configuration -> Google Analytics and enter your Google Analytics account number in the appropriate field. Then you need to specify a few simple settings as follows . . .
- Leave Customer Tracking to "user cannot control whether they are tracked or not"
- Set tracking to just track Anonymous users unless you are supporting user accounts
- You will normally want to leave tracking to track all pages
- Most of the rest of the fields can be left to default
Then remember to press "Save Configuration" and you should be good to go. You get all the GA stats from the Google site. It is not saved on your own website.
